How to Get Professional Microneedling Results at Home | Dr. Pen Guide

Welcome to your journey toward radiant, youthful skin! To achieve that professional "office-visit" glow safely at home, it is important to follow a structured protocol. This guide outlines the exact steps recommended by experts to ensure your treatment is safe, comfortable, and effective.

Important Note: To allow your skin to fully heal and produce collagen, microneedling should only be performed once every 4 to 6 weeks.

PHASE 1: PRE-NEEDLING PREP

Preparing your canvas is the secret to a smooth recovery.

3 Days Before:
To minimize sensitivity and bruising, avoid anti-inflammatory medications (like Ibuprofen), alcohol, and fish oil supplements for at least 72 hours before your session.

Your Glow Kit Essentials:

  • Dr. Pen Device (fully charged)

  • New, Sterile Cartridge (single-use only)

  • Hyaluronic Acid Serum (recommended for lubrication)

  • 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (for sanitizing)

  • Clean Towel & Cotton Pads

  • Optional: Surgical gloves and over-the-counter numbing cream (5% Lidocaine)

Step-by-Step Preparation:

  1. Double Cleanse: Tie your hair back and cleanse your skin twice with your favorite gentle cleanser. Removing all traces of makeup, oil, and debris is crucial to prevent irritation or infection.

  2. Numbing (Optional): If you are sensitive to the needling sensation, apply numbing cream to the target area. Leave it on for 20–30 minutes.

    • Crucial Step: You must completely remove the numbing cream before you begin. Wipe it off thoroughly and cleanse again with 0.1 Chlorhexidine or a mix of purified water and alcohol. This ensures no cream is pushed into the micro-channels created during treatment.

  3. Sanitize Everything: Ensure your workspace is pristine. Wipe down your device and the surface you are using.

    • Pro Tip: Pour some serum into a small sterile bowl and apply it with a brush. Touching the serum bottle during treatment can cause cross-contamination.

PHASE 2: THE MICRONEEDLING PROCESS

Precision and patience lead to the best results.

  1. Lubricate with Serum: Apply Hyaluronic Acid serum to the area you’re about to needle. This acts as a lubricant, allowing the pen to glide effortlessly without dragging or pulling the skin.

    • Safety Check: Do not use Vitamin C, Retinol, or exfoliants during the treatment, as they can cause a reaction.

  2. The Technique: Open a fresh cartridge and attach it to your Dr. Pen (do not touch the needle tips!). Work in small sections, applying serum just before you needle each area.

  3. The Pattern: Move the pen in a structured grid: Vertical, then Horizontal, then Diagonal in both directions. Use light pressure and use your free hand to hold the skin taut.

  4. Body Treatments: If treating areas like the legs or hands, avoid bony areas. Use 36-42 pin cartridges for the body. We recommend a 0.5mm depth for legs and up to 1.5mm for areas with more fatty tissue.

PHASE 3: POST-NEEDLING & AFTERCARE

Nurture your skin while it transforms.

Immediately After:

  • If you wish to rinse, use only tepid water.

  • Immediately re-apply Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and calm the skin.

  • Expect Redness: It is perfectly normal to experience redness, swelling, and pinpoint bleeding. Think of it as a mild sunburn—it’s a sign your skin is starting its natural repair process!

The First 24 Hours:

  • Keep it Clean: Avoid working out, sweating, or swimming.

  • Go Bare: Do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours. If you absolutely must, use a mineral-based product specifically designed for sensitive post-treatment skin.

  • Sun Shield: If you go outside, you must apply a high-protection sunscreen.

THE RECOVERY TIMELINE

24 Hours After:
You may switch to a gentle cleanser and a nourishing moisturizer. Stick to "clean" hydration—avoid fragrance, Vitamin C, Retinol, AHA/BHAs, or physical scrubs. If your skin feels tight or starts to peel, keep it well-moisturized to alleviate discomfort.

48 Hours After:
If your skin feels dry or flaky, you can gently exfoliate with a soft washcloth (avoid chemical or harsh physical scrubs). If your skin still feels sensitive, wait another day. Continue hydrating twice daily.

Days 3–5:
Continue using high-protection sunscreen daily and avoid direct, extended sun exposure. Focus on hydration and keep your routine simple.

Day 7+:
You can now return to your regular skincare routine, including your favorite active ingredients and exfoliants. Enjoy your refreshed, glowing complexion!
